Many hands build a house, many hearts build a school
‘We are a national network of over 400 primary and secondary schools, nurseries and sixth forms all committed to creating a culture of welcome and inclusion for refugees and people seeking asylum.
Driven by teachers, school staff, parents, governors and community groups, this network supports the thousands of young people seeking sanctuary in the UK, raises awareness of the issues facing people in the asylum system, challenges misconceptions and builds social cohesion. Schools are supported every step of the way either by an accredited Local Lead or by the Schools of Sanctuary Team at City of Sanctuary UK.’ City of Sanctuary
We are currently working towards becoming a School Of Sanctuary.
The children were lucky to have a visit from Hawkar Salih, also known as Hisham Saeed, who came in to speak to the children about his journey to the UK!
Here is the presentation he shared with the pupils:
Christmas Gifts 2023:
This Christmas 2023, we are supporting Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary Seekers in donating Christmas wrapped gifts for refugees. These gifts will be distributed in Swansea for refugee families.
We are currently applying to become a "School of Sanctuary". This is our pledge:
We are an all-inclusive, family orientated, welcoming Church in Wales Primary School, at the heart of our local community. We have strong links with our local church and clergy, support our Dementia Friends and local charities, and together we welcome all faiths and walks of life, supporting all children and families within our community. Our school motto is "Many hands build a house, many hearts build a school" and we believe strongly that by loving, caring and encouraging every pupil to fulfil their potential, we can unlock their creativity and sense of awe and wonder. Our vision for the Curriculum for Wales is "Nurture, Wonder, Thrive" and we wish this for all pupils. Every year we work with Brecon Foodbank to support families in need and were a local community collection point for donations of items and medical supplies shipped out to Ukrainian refugees."
This term, some of our Religion, Values and Ethics work has focussed on becoming a School of Sanctuary and welcoming refugees. We have been learning about refugees and welcomed 2 visitors, Michael and Otis. We also donated wrapped Christmas gifts this year to Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees to distribute.
