Rosie, our Dog Mentor
We are proud to announce we have a Dog Mentor at our School!
Clyro CiW Primary School is proud to work with a trained Dog Mentor to support pupils’ wellbeing, confidence, and engagement with learning.
Rosie, our Dog Mentor is a six year old maltipoo, specially trained dog who works at our school to help children develop emotional regulation, communication skills, and positive relationships.
Through structured sessions, our pupils can interact with our Dog Mentor in a calm and supportive environment. Activities may include reading to Rosie, practising gentle handling, learning about body language, and building trust. These interactions can help reduce anxiety, improve focus, and encourage children who may find school challenging.
Research and experience show that working with therapy dogs can:
- Boost confidence and self-esteem
- Support emotional wellbeing
- Improve social and communication skills
- Encourage reading and learning engagement
- Help children develop empathy and responsibility
All Dog Mentor sessions are carefully supervised by trained staff and follow strict welfare, hygiene, and safeguarding guidelines to ensure a safe experience for both pupils and Rosie.
The Dog Mentor programme is part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child—supporting not only academic success but also emotional wellbeing and personal development.

Top Tips when Meeting Rosie at School 🐾
- Always ask first – never approach or stroke Rosie without permission from the adult in charge.
- Stay calm and quiet – use gentle voices and movements so Rosie feels safe.
- Let Rosie come to you – stand or sit calmly and give them the choice to approach.
- One at a time – avoid crowding around Rosie or trying to get her attention all at once.
- Gentle hands – if you have permission, stroke gently on the shoulder, side or back rather than reaching over Rosie's head.
- Give them space – never disturb Rosie when they are eating, drinking, sleeping or resting in their special safe area ( under Mrs McCrohon's desk!).
- Be kind and respectful – just like us, dogs have feelings and sometimes need quiet time.
- Wash your hands after touching or playing with Rosie.
